Li Wang-Yang Statue, created in 2018. The statue is 6 meters high with its base. It took Mr. Chen Weiming 3 months to complete the creation.

Li Wang-Yang (1950.11.12-2012.6.6) was a native of Slippery Stone New Village, Daxiang District, Shaoyang City, Hunan Province, China. He was one of the earliest activists and leaders of the labor movement in China's independent labor unions. In 1983, he organized the Shaoyang Workers' Mutual Aid Association and founded the Zijiang Minbao newspaper; in 1989, he organized workers' self-government to participate in the June Fourth Incident and was sentenced to 13 years in prison for "counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement". In 1989, he organized workers' autonomy and participated in the "June Fourth Incident", and was sentenced to 13 years in prison for "counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement", and in 2001, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for "inciting subversion of state power", accumulating a total of 22 years. He was one of the political prisoners who had been imprisoned for the longest period of time during the "June 4 Incident". During his imprisonment, he insisted on his principles, rejected the claims of those in power, and was subjected to torture and severe physical abuse. His family was also persecuted.

He was released from prison on May 5, 2012, and on May 22, 2012, with the help of a friend, he was interviewed by Lin Jiancheng, a reporter from the China desk of Hong Kong's Cable News Channel, which aired on June 2, and the Internal Security Bureau of the local Ministry of Public Security (ISB) stepped up its surveillance of him.4 On June 4, Li Wangyang was awarded the "Spirit of Freedom Award" by the National Autonomous Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars. At 4:00 a.m. on June 6, Li Wangyang's sister, Li Wangling, was notified that he had committed suicide at the People's Hospital of Daxiang District, Shaoyang City, Hunan Province, and that the cause of his death was in doubt. In fact, she was murdered by the Chinese Communist Party, and the so-called "suicide" caused public outcry and indignation in Hong Kong. Li Wangyang once defended himself in court, saying: "Demonstration and freedom of speech are rights granted to the people by the Constitution, and I am neither guilty nor wrong. ⋯⋯... Chinese workers have awakened! ...... This government has gone against the people."

In an interview with reporter Lin Jiancheng, he expressed his hope that Ding Zilin of the Tiananmen Mothers Campaign would persevere: "Prof. Ding Zilin, a great mother, has been calling out, appealing, and shouting for the vindication of the Tiananmen Incident for more than twenty years every single day of her life, and she deserves to be called a Tiananmen Mother, and I hope that she will persevere until the day of vindication. The June 4 Incident must be vindicated, and the souls of the dead martyrs, should rest in peace." Talking about his body, which was destroyed because of his commitment to the pro-democracy movement, he said he had no regrets: "The rise and fall of the nation is the responsibility of every man. For the sake of the country's early entry into a democratic society and for the early realization of a multi-party system in China, I will not turn back even if I have my head chopped off!"

In a telephone interview with reporters at the statue inauguration ceremony, Mr. Chen Weiming expressed his special admiration for Li Wangyang, the iron man of the pro-democracy movement, for his spirit of "preferring to kill his head rather than turn back", "It was because of his persistence that he sacrificed his life in pursuit of freedom, democracy and constitutionalism in China. Li Wangyang's spirit of chopping off heads and not looking back is very worthy of our study, and I hope his statue will inspire more people to rise up against authoritarian rule." "When I was conceptualizing it, of course, I wanted to reflect the fact that he sang with his neck high and was not afraid of being killed. The chain on his hand symbolizes the dictatorship, and his kind of unyielding image stands under the dome of the sky, but he is not alone. Through this statue, I hope to tell freedom-loving people in China that when one Li Wangyang falls, millions of Li Wangyangs stand up like this sculpture, and Li Wangyang is like a bright light that shines for us to move forward."
